Building a Home Away from Home – A Host Family’s Journey in Western Australia

Disclaimer: To protect privacy, I have chosen to refer to our friends as Host Family A and Participant A rather than disclosing their identities.

When a couple who had spent years traveling across Australia and working in remote communities saw an opportunity to become a host family in Western Australia, they knew it was time for their next adventure. Having previously provided in-home support to children and young adults in need, they felt drawn to this new challenge and decided to reach out about the position.

The couple, referred to as Host Family A, had recently returned to Brisbane after completing a stint in the Northern Territory, where they had worked with a remote community. Back in Brisbane, they spent time with family and friends contemplating their next steps. When they saw the advertisement for a host family position in WA, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to continue doing what they were passionate about – offering care and support.

Following a series of discussions, phone calls, and video meetings with us, Host Family A made the decision to take the leap. They packed what could fit in their Ute and set off on a 10-day road trip from Brisbane to Bunbury, taking the scenic route to enjoy the journey and break it up so they would arrive well-rested. By November 2023, they had officially begun their new role as the host family for Participant A.

Before the formal living arrangement began, Participant A, a nonverbal young adult with limited use of key word sign, was introduced to the couple, to allow him time to get to know them and understand that they would soon be living with him. We also ensured that Host Family A received support and training to understand Participant A's unique communication style.

Now, nine months into the arrangement, the results speak for themselves. Participant A has once again found a sense of belonging and family. He is thriving, feeling connected and valued both at home and within the broader community. Host Family A has embraced life in the local area, immersing themselves in Bunbury’s community groups and events, helping everyone feel more connected.

Weekends are a time of exploration and bonding, as Host Family A and Participant A visit local attractions, enjoy meals at country pubs, and attend community events. The couple has provided Participant A with the consistent, predictable, and routine environment he needs, allowing him to live his best life. His personality shines, and Host Family A finds joy in watching him grow and thrive.

This case study highlights the profound impact a committed host family can have. By providing stable, compassionate care, Host Family A has not only made a difference in Participant A’s life but has also built meaningful connections and found a deeper sense of purpose in their own journey.
