Getting Started with the NDIS: Answers to the Most Common Questions

If you're new to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), you're not alone. For many people, the NDIS can seem complicated at first. The good news is that once you understand the basics, the process becomes much easier to navigate.

Question 1: Am I Eligible for the NDIS?

This is usually the first question people ask.

Generally, you may be eligible if you:

  • Are under 65 years of age when you apply

  • Live in Australia and meet residency requirements

  • Have a permanent disability that has a significant impact on your daily life

  • Need disability-related supports now and into the future, or would benefit from early intervention supports

The NDIS assesses each application individually. Having a disability diagnosis alone does not automatically guarantee access. The focus is on how the disability impacts everyday activities and participation in the community. [ndis.gov.au]

Tip

If you're unsure whether you meet the criteria, speaking with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Early Childhood Partner, Support Coordinator, or disability advocate can help you understand your options before applying.

Question 2: How Do I Apply and What Happens Next?

Once you've determined you may be eligible, the next step is applying to access the NDIS.

Step 1: Gather Evidence

You'll need information from health professionals that explains:

  • Your diagnosis

  • How your disability affects your daily life

  • Why ongoing support is required

Evidence can come from:

  • GPs

  • Specialists

  • Psychologists

  • Occupational Therapists

  • Allied Health Professionals

Step 2: Submit an Access Request

You can contact the NDIS and complete an Access Request. Your evidence will be reviewed by the NDIA. [pwd.org.au], [ndis.gov.au]

Step 3: Receive a Decision

If approved, you will become an NDIS participant and move into the planning stage. [ndis.gov.au]

Step 4: Attend Your Planning Meeting

During your planning conversation, you'll discuss:

  • Your goals

  • Daily support needs

  • Therapy requirements

  • Community participation

  • Equipment or assistive technology needs

  • Future living and independence goals

The information you provide helps determine the funded supports included in your plan. [ndis.gov.au]

Step 5: Start Using Your Plan

Once your plan is approved, you can begin accessing supports and services funded through the NDIS. Depending on your situation, this may include:

  • Personal care

  • Community participation

  • Therapy supports

  • Support Coordination

  • Assistive technology

  • Home and living supports

Final Thoughts

The NDIS is designed to help people with disability live more independently, pursue their goals, and participate in their communities. While the application process can seem daunting, taking it one step at a time makes it much more manageable.

The two most important things to understand are:

  • Whether you're eligible

  • How to gather strong evidence to support your application

Getting these right from the start can make the entire process smoother and help ensure you receive the supports you need.
