Every year on December 3, the world comes together to recognise the contributions, rights, and achievements of people with disabilities through the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD). This day is about more than just raising awareness—it’s a celebration of resilience, diversity, and the power of inclusion.

At Best Life Support Services WA, this day holds special meaning for us. It’s a chance to celebrate our friends, reflect on the progress that’s been made toward creating a more inclusive world, and shout from the rooftops our commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities to live their best lives.
The History of IDPwD
The United Nations established the International Day of People with Disabilities in 1992 to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities. It also aims to increase awareness of the challenges many still face, from accessibility barriers to social stigma.
Each year, IDPwD adopts a theme to guide global conversations and initiatives. This year’s theme emphasises the importance of leadership by persons with disabilities in achieving an inclusive and sustainable future. It calls on all of us to create environments where individuals can lead with confidence, strength, and determination.
Why It Matters
Leadership Drives Change:
People with disabilities bring unique perspectives and insights to leadership roles.
Empowering Role Models:
Recognising leaders with disabilities inspires others to pursue their goals and demonstrates the limitless potential of inclusion.
Building Connections:
It brings together individuals, families, organisations, and governments to work collectively toward a common goal: equality and empowerment for people with disabilities.
How Best Life Support Services WA Celebrates IDPwD
At Best Life Support Services WA, we’re passionate about celebrating the leadership and achievements of the people we support. This year, we’re proud to host our annual Talent Show at Australind Hall—a joyful event where individuals can can shine and share their abilities with the community.
Through events like this, we aim to:
Encourage Leadership: Allow participants opportunities to take the stage, share their talents, and inspire others.
Foster Inclusion: Bring the community together to celebrate diversity and recognise the contributions of persons with disabilities.
Amplify Voices: Highlight stories of leadership and success to shift perceptions and create opportunities.
What You Can Do to Amplify Leadership
Celebrating IDPwD doesn’t have to be limited to December 3. Here are some ways you can make a difference year-round:
Educate Yourself: Learn more about the rights and challenges of people with disabilities.
Support Inclusion: Advocate for accessible environments and inclusive policies.
Engage Locally: Attend events, volunteer, or partner with organisations supporting individuals with disabilities.
Celebrate Abilities: Focus on what people can do, rather than their limitations.
Looking Forward Together
The International Day of People with Disabilities is not just a celebration—it’s about action. It’s a call to continue building a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, feel valued, and contribute.
At Best Life Support Services WA, we’re proud to champion this vision every day. Together, we can turn awareness into action and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to lead and thrive.
